DESMOND HEELEY

Theatrical design
legend Desmond Heeley made his Broadway debut with the original
production of Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz & Guildestern Are Dead. His
designs won two Tony Awards, the only time in the history of the Tonys
that a designer has received these coveted awards for the settings and
costumes of the same play.
For six decades, with
extraordinarily versatility, he has designed for the theatre, ballet and
opera around the world, collaborating with many distinguished directors
and choreographers, among them Sir Peter Hall, Michael Langham, Sir
Laurence Olivier, John Cranko and Gian Carlo Menotti.
Heeley’s settings and
costumes have graced such stages as the Royal Opera House Covent Garden,
the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala and the Vienna State Opera. He has
designed for great companies like The Royal Shakespeare Company,
American Ballet Theater, The English National Ballet, the National
Ballet of Canada and many others. Over the years a long and glittering
list of artists and performers have worn his designs: Dame Margot
Fonteyn, Mikhail Baryshinikov, Beverly Sills, Placido Domingo and actors
Alan Bates, Vivien Leigh, Maggie Smith and Judi Dench.
In 1994 he was the
first recipient of the prestigious Irene Sharaff Lifetime Achievement
Award. Desmond Heeley’s work is in museums and galleries within the
United Kingdom, the United States and Canada, as well as many private
collections.
Now, for the first
time, Desmond Heeley’s enchanting illustrations are available to
licensees.
